RACING WAS ALWAYS MEANT TO BE SHARED

Words by Jeffrey Schuessler, Director of Global Racing Programs, Harley-Davidson

Halfway through the inaugural FIM Harley-Davidson Bagger World Cup season, Jeffrey Schuessler reflects on how the championship is bringing together world-class competition, authentic fan experiences, stronger dealer engagement and a growing global community inspired to ride.

I've spent more than twenty-five years working in motorsports and have been fortunate to experience some of the greatest championships in the world.

Every series has its own personality, but they all share the same spirit, and we see that spirit every day in the FIM Harley-Davidson Bagger World Cup.

At its core, racing is the relentless pursuit of improvement.

Riders searching for the perfect lap. Teams chasing fractions of a second. Engineers solving problems that seemed impossible only weeks before. Every mechanic, technician and crew member working toward a common goal.

Racing is about believing you can outperform the competition, even when the odds suggest otherwise.

That's what has kept me passionate about motorsports throughout my career.

Launching the inaugural FIM Harley-Davidson Bagger World Cup has also reminded me of something else:

The best racing stories don't end at the checkered flag. They begin there.

They continue in the paddock, where riders spend time with fans, mechanics explain the technology behind the motorcycles and people gain a new appreciation for the teamwork, craftsmanship and commitment required to compete at the highest level.

Those are the moments people remember long after the trophies have been handed out.

That's what I've found myself reflecting on throughout the first half of our inaugural season.

  • Crowd gathers around Harley-Davidson racers during a fan meet-and-greet at a motorcycle racing event

ACROSS OUR FIRST FOUR ROUNDS, WELL OVER HALF A MILLION FANS HAVE ATTENDED MOTOGP EVENTS WHERE HARLEY-DAVIDSON RACING IS LOCATED AT THE HEART OF THE PUBLIC FAN ZONE.

It is also important to recognize the people who have made this championship possible.

From the beginning, we have been fortunate to welcome an incredible group of professional teams, world-class riders and committed technical and commercial partners who believed in the vision of building something entirely new.

Launching a new world championship is never easy. Yet they have embraced the challenge with professionalism, passion and a shared commitment to raising the standard every time we go racing.

They are not simply competing in the first season of a championship.

They are helping define what this series will become for years to come.

Across our first four rounds, well over half a million fans have attended MotoGP events where Harley-Davidson Racing is located at the heart of the public fan zone.

That was intentional.

When we designed the championship alongside our partners at MotoGP, our goal was to remove as many barriers as possible between the fans and the sport.

We did not build the H-D Bagger World Cup to be hidden behind fences. We built it so fans could experience professional racing from just a few feet away.

Every weekend, fans walk past our garages and watch mechanics prepare motorcycles, engineers study data and riders debrief after sessions. For many, it is the closest they have ever been to a professional race team.

That access gives Harley riders an introduction to MotoGP, while MotoGP fans experience our racing program, and often the brand itself, for the first time.

RATHER THAN FEELING LIKE A TRADITIONAL PRODUCT DISPLAY, IT FEELS LIKE A HARLEY-DAVIDSON GATHERING TAKING PLACE INSIDE ONE OF THE WORLD’S BIGGEST MOTORCYCLE EVENTS.

I've caught myself standing back more than once, simply watching people take it all in.

Kids stop in their tracks when the bikes fire up. Parents ask questions they have never had the chance to ask before. Riders share stories. Teams welcome curious fans into conversations.

You can see curiosity turning into enthusiasm.

Walk a little farther and the experience naturally continues into the Harley-Davidson activation.

Rather than feeling like a traditional product display, it feels like a Harley-Davidson gathering taking place inside one of the world's biggest motorcycle events.

Families explore our newest motorcycles. Riders learn more about Performance Parts & Accessories inspired by the race bikes they have just seen in the garage. Fans try racing simulators, listen to American rock music, meet our racers, browse Harley-Davidson Racing apparel and spend time together in our hospitality areas.

Then they return to the paddock to watch another session before coming back again.

There is no clear beginning or end to the experience. It flows naturally between world-class racing and the Harley-Davidson lifestyle.

To me, that is what makes this championship unique.

  • Person rides a Harley-Davidson touring motorcycle on a simulator, racing a virtual track at an event display
  • Spectators look into a race team garage as crew members prepare a motorcycle before competition

Our dealers have embraced that vision in ways that have been incredibly rewarding to watch.

They have done much more than invite customers to a race weekend. They have brought entire riding communities.

H.O.G. chapters traveling together. Weekend rides ending at the circuit. Longtime customers introducing friends and family to Harley-Davidson. New riders discovering the brand through racing for the first time.

Dealers are the bridge between the excitement of a race weekend and a lasting relationship with Harley-Davidson.

The races themselves last around twenty minutes.

The inspiration lasts much longer.

It continues at local dealerships, where riders relive the weekend, plan their next ride and talk about the motorcycles they saw on track. Some become interested in the Performance Parts & Accessories that connect racing with the motorcycles they ride every day. Others simply rediscover the excitement of getting back on their own Harley-Davidson.

THE RACES THEMSELVES LAST AROUND TWENTY MINUTES. THE INSPIRATION LASTS MUCH LONGER.

  • Harley-Davidson riders wearing Wallis Valais Chapter Switzerland H.O.G. patches gather outside a branded display
  • H.O.G. member in a Harley-Davidson vest walks through a motorcycle event with riders and bikes nearby

If racing inspires someone to ride more often, reconnect with their dealership, personalize their motorcycle or introduce a friend to Harley-Davidson, I believe we have accomplished something meaningful.

Another unmistakable sign of that connection is the growing presence of Harley-Davidson Racing apparel throughout the paddock.

At first, it was our teams. Then our dealers. Now it is fans from around the world proudly wearing Harley-Davidson Racing.

To me, that has never been only about selling apparel.

It is about belonging.

About people choosing to identify with this community, our riders, our teams and the racing heritage Harley-Davidson has carried for generations.

Watching that grow race after race has been incredibly rewarding, and it is easy to understand why the H-D Factory Racing collection has become the most successful racing apparel launch in Harley-Davidson's history.

  • Visitors gather at a Harley-Davidson merchandise booth, browsing apparel and speaking with staff
  • Harley-Davidson enthusiasts line up inside a merchandise display, shopping for apparel and gear

The experience does not end when fans leave the circuit.

One of my favorite parts of every race weekend is seeing the stories that appear over the following days. Families sharing photos. Dealers posting customer rides inspired by the event. MotoGP fans talking about Harley-Davidson with friends. Harley riders sharing a newfound appreciation for MotoGP.

The championship continues through thousands of conversations, photos, videos and social stories long after the transporters have left the circuit.

Those stories may never appear in a race report, but they are an important measure of the connection being created.

After twenty-five years in motorsports, I have learned that people rarely remember every qualifying session or every race result.

They remember how an experience made them feel.

WE ARE BUILDING SOMETHING FAR MORE MEANINGFUL THAN A RACING CHAMPIONSHIP. WE ARE STRENGTHENING THE FUTURE OF THE HARLEY-DAVIDSON COMMUNITY.

  • Rows of Harley-Davidson motorcycles on display as riders explore exhibits and event attractions
  • Crowd gathers around a custom Harley-Davidson race bike during a live motorcycle showcase event

At Harley-Davidson, we do not race simply to win trophies.

We race to inspire people to ride.

We race to introduce new riders to Harley-Davidson.

We race to strengthen our dealers, support our riding community and create authentic experiences people will remember for years.

We race to showcase what is possible with our motorcycles, our Performance Parts & Accessories and the people who make this brand so special.

Most importantly, we race because motorcycles have always been about freedom, adventure and bringing people together.

If our first season has accomplished anything, I hope it has reminded people of that.

Because if we have inspired someone to take another ride, visit their local dealer, share the experience with family or discover Harley-Davidson for the first time, we are building something far more meaningful than a racing championship.

We are strengthening the future of the Harley-Davidson community.

That's why I believe racing was always meant to be shared.
