The Softail® platform is one of the most iconic and popular in the entire Harley-Davidson® range. We spoke to new owners from around the world to find out what drew them to this model
My father was a motocross rider, so I’ve been around bikes since I was just a child. I always dreamed of owning a Harley-Davidson® motorcycle as I feel that Harley® history is so significant to me, and to the wider world. More than just a bike or brand, it’s a lifestyle. I was drawn to the Softail® platform as it’s a combination of classic H-D® design and welcome new developments, such as the lighter, stiffer frame. My work as a professional skateboarder can make it difficult to ride regularly, but whenever I have time I get out on my bike and go as far as I can!
I began motorcycling in 2015 and my first bike was a Yamaha, but I tried out the Harley-Davidson® Breakout® for the first time in 2017. Now I have my own 2018 Breakout and I try to ride every day, weather permitting. I was thrilled when I first sat on my Breakout – the new engine gives smooth movement, and the sound of the motor is like music to me! I really enjoy taking trips to the countryside 100-250km from my hometown of Minsk – I try to choose quiet roads with lots of bends and scenery. This year I’m also hoping to travel to Prague by motorcycle – a distance of more than 1200km.
I’ve always been a die-hard fan of Harley-Davidson®, so when I made up my mind to buy my own, nothing was going to stop me. After many test rides, and many different permutations and combinations, it was the Fat Bob® that caught my attention. I love to use my bike to explore the mountains – especially in the state of Himachal Pradesh, in the north of India. The Fat Bob is so unique in its design and it feels amazing on the road. I’ve already travelled a lot on it, but this year I am planning to ride to one of the regional Indian H.O.G.® rallies.
I first saw the new Sport Glide® by chance when visiting a dealership to look at a used bike. That was it – I couldn’t get that beautiful bike out of my head! How it sounds, how it rides, its versatility…I was struck by it! A few days after picking it up from the dealership, I hit the road with my best friend, a fellow Harley® aficionado. We headed to Holland to visit a friend – it was a fantastic road trip! Although I was used to a completely different type of bike, I immediately found the Softail® platform to be a good fit.
I love everything about my Fat Bob®: the Stage IV kit that I had installed; the urban appearance; the sound of the motor; the sheer power in its acceleration; and the way it handles in city traffic. When I’m out riding, I feel the wind in my face and roaring thunder behind me. This year I’m planning to test myself and my bike by riding to the capital Nur-Sultan, 1200km away, and to neighbouring Uzbekistan. For me, Harley-Davidson® is legendary – every H-D® motorcycle is crafted with soul.
I first rode a motorcycle aged 37, having only driven snowmobiles previously! For me, the obvious choice was Harley-Davidson®, the king of the motorcycle industry. After riding a Sportster® Forty-Eight®, I decided to buy a Heritage Classic for long journeys. This bike is the manifestation of the slogan ‘Screw it – let’s ride!’; it’s a style icon and is comfortable on any journey, from long-distance to urban riding. We have a short summer in Siberia where I live, so this year I did my best to make the most of it by travelling only by motorcycle during this time.
I had to have a motorcycle licence in order to become a police officer, so I jumped at the chance to ride at work! But it wasn’t until a few years later that I tried a Harley®, on a photoshoot in the Sierra Nevada. At the end of 2017 I was lucky enough to take part in another shoot, this time trialling the new Softail® range. At the end of the shoot, my mind was made up, and a few days after returning home I went and ordered my Low Rider®. I feel so confident riding it, in the city or in the hills – I’m really looking forward to the day my son is old enough to ride pillion, which I can’t imagine saying about any other bike!
I was first inspired to get my licence by my dad, who took his bike test in his mid-50s. A series of powerful sports bikes followed, until congested roads and bad drivers made me consider giving it up completely. Then one day a friend turned up on his new Harley-Davidson® Forty-Eight®. That Harley® exhaust sound was like a taste of heaven! When delivery day arrived for my 2018 Breakout®, I was beaming from ear to ear. Even now, every single time I go out for a ride I feel as though it’s the first time. You just can’t fake a Harley!
