The “trip of a lifetime” for two Ontario riders on a quest to explore North America from the open road

Jennifer Janes and her riding friend Stan had dreamt of exploring the Grand Canyon area for years – so when the opportunity arose to make the trip, they decided to make it the trip of a lifetime.

“What started as a bucket list road trip to visit the Grand Canyon turned into so much more,” Jennifer explained. “I didn't have enough vacation time to ride there and back, so we flew to Vegas and rented a couple of Harley® motorcycles from Eagle Rider on Dean Martin Drive.”

After picking up the bikes – a Street Glide® for Jennifer and an Electra Glide® for Stan – the Bowmanville, Ontario, riders spent the next few days soaking up some legendary road adventures.

“The Grand Canyon was the first thing on our agenda and it was truly wonderful, but what followed was even more amazing,” Jennifer said. “We rode parts of Old Route 66 with the most incredible stretch between Oatman and Kingman, Arizona. From gentle curves to tight switchbacks through mountain passes and desert, the narrow road is a motorcyclist’s dream.”

Each day brought more iconic sights. “We stopped in Winslow – just to stand on ‘the corner’ – then headed up to Utah,” Jennifer said. “It seemed that each day we rode and the further we travelled, the sights just kept getting better. Into Monument Valley, through several national and state parks, along numerous scenic byways, the pictures couldn’t begin to do it justice.”

At the end of their ride, Jennifer and Stan opted to check out the heart of the Grand Canyon from an entirely different perspective: the sky.

“We took a helicopter ride and landed in the base of the canyon,” Jennifer said. “It was breathtaking. If you’ve never been there, you don’t realize just how vast it is.”

The two riders are now deciding whether to ride west or east in 2020. “I think we will likely ride Newfoundland next summer,” Jennifer said. “We’ll take the ferry over and tour the island. Stan wants to experience Gros Morne National Park.”

Until then, they’ve got plenty of great riding memories to get them through the winter off-season.  “We’ve done lots of trips to the south. But this one to the Grand Canyon was definitely a trip of a lifetime,” Jennifer said.
