Meet Glory, our new feathered ambassadorTake a Tour

Welcome

Nearly 105 years in the making, the Harley-Davidson Museum, located near downtown Milwaukee, opened its doors to the public on Saturday, July 12, 2008. The 130,000-square-foot Museum adds a new dimension to the Harley-Davidson experience. Visitors get a feel for the freedom, camaraderie and pride that Harley-Davidson riders experience every time they fire up their motorcycles.

Every gallery and exhibit is a testimony to the legendary bikes, the people who built them and, of course, every individual who ever felt their powerful rumble on a long stretch of asphalt.

At the H-D Museum you can:

  • Walk through exhibits that tell the stories of the extraordinary people, products, history and culture of Harley-Davidson. In addition to the fantastic motorcycle collection, stories are told through photos, videos, apparel, rare documents and other artifacts.
  • Peek into a portion of the Archives never before open to the public, home to over 450 motorcycles and thousands of artifacts the Archives team pulls from for exhibits.
  • Read the personalized messages created by individuals worldwide on the Living the Legend rivets, found on the Living the Legend walls and plazas.
  • Stroll around the 20 acre Museum site, enjoy the riverwalk or just sit back along the waterfront taking in the Milwaukee skyline.
  • Check out the unique Museum-inspired items at The Shop.
  • Examine the industrial architecture and attention to detail both inside and outside the Museum's three buildings.

Glory, the Museum's new feathered ambassador

Get to know Glory, our new Museum Feathered Ambassador

Glory is a 9 year old Bald Eagle that belongs to the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center and will be making appearances during H-D Museum Family Days, beginning Sunday, May 2, 2010 and at many summer events. Come to the Museum and welcome our new feathered ambassador, have your photo taken with him and learn more about our national symbol, the Bald Eagle.

Species: “Haliaeetus leucocephalus alascanus” Bald Eagle, only fish eagle in North America
Sex: Male
Age: 9 years old
Weight: 12 pounds
Wingspan: 7.5 feet
Length: 40 inches for tip of beak to tip of tail

Glory, as a fledgling, was injured on one of his first flights from the nest. He broke his metacarpal bones - the equivalent to finger bones - in his left wing. Metacarpals are very important because they operate the primary feathers necessary for flight. A canoeist on the Wisconsin River found Glory and brought him to a raptor rehabilitator. He was cared for over a two month time period and the bones healed correctly.

Glory was than moved to a pre-release facility so that he could re-build his flight muscles and hone his hunting skills. When put in with a group of recovering eagles, a problem arose. The other eagles began to fly at Glory and roll him on the ground. Separated from other wild eagles during an important maturing stage, Glory had not developed the correct body postures and vocalizations necessary to communicate and survive with other eagles.

In fact, he did not associate himself with eagles at all. Unfortunately, Glory had imprinted on people during his initial rehabilitation care. He now associates himself with people and looks to them for his food and social status. This is hard wired into his brain and is irreversible. Because of this he is not able to be released back into the wild.

Glory was placed at the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center in December of 2001 as a 6 month old bird. When Glory arrived he had a coal black beak and a solid brown eye and brown body. He has gone through several plumage changes over the years and now sports the classic adult bald eagle plumage of a white head and tail, brown body and yellow beak and eye.

Glory enjoys taking baths, playing with the water hose (including spraying staff), catching and eating fish, and sun bathing. He also likes to take excursions to SANC’s Lake Michigan shore line and play in the waves.

He has been the star of the Sky Hunters Birds of Prey Show at the 11 day Wisconsin State Fair presented by We Energies at We Energies Park for the last 6 years.
