If you’re on the fence, tempted, thinking, looking to trade, interested in, or just plain curious about buying a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, there’s only one thing you need to do: test ride the motorcycle of your dreams. That’s exactly what I was after at the Harley-Davidson demo tent, today. I wanted to find someone who was doing just that.
And honestly, it didn’t take long at all. In fact, the first couple I met today was Sandy and Vince from Kentucky. What a nice couple! Vince rides a Softail Deuce, and Sandy currently rides a Suzuki. But today, Sandy wanted to get out and try a Softail Deluxe. Since I had the hook-up, we decided to offer them a once-in-a-lifetime demo ride experience.
We took them behind the scenes to show them what all goes in to making the demo rides possible at events like the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. And it is so much more than you think! This demo truck travels all across the country and makes stops at all different rallies to offer the opportunity for people to test ride a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. We talked to some of the technicians about what they do and what they love about their job. We gave Sandy and Vince the opportunity to ask them questions they had about their current bikes and the new 2008 motorcycles. And I think they really enjoyed this exciting opportunity.
After the “behind the scenes” time with the demo crew, Sandy and Vince were ready to demo some bikes! After their test ride, it was great to see Sandy’s reaction. She was genuinely thrilled. It was so cool!! And she looked so good on that Deluxe!! Sandy, that bike was made for you. I was so impressed with how well she did on that bike.
And the coolest thing about demos is that everyone gets this experience. Volunteers are on hand to set you up with the right bike and walk you through the bike’s features. They are going on all week (through Saturday) and you don’t want to miss this VERY cool opportunity.
After we said our “goodbyes” and “nice meeting you’s” to our new found friends Sandy and Vince, I decided to head up to the Black Hills Harley-Davidson and Buell dealership and check out what they had going on.
What an operation! These guys are working around the clock! Bikes were lining up to get in, and I got the chance to speak to some of the staff there and get the inside scoop. One of the questions I asked the dealership was, “How many people come out to Sturgis and buy a bike to ride home?” Surprisingly quite a few!!!! I can imagine that if you are out here, know how to ride and you don’t have a bike, there isn’t a time like right now that you want a bike more than EVER!! I walked upstairs to the outside showroom floor and I started talking to this lady sitting on the Nightster because I overheard her saying how much she absolutely LOVED the bike. Come to find out she had just bought it and is planning to take it home with her! How cool is that?!
After pursuing the dealer floor, I headed back to home base, and up to my room where I ran into my Sturgis hotel roomie/ex-work cubemate/ex-neighbor/friend, Natalie. Honestly, we are both so busy here at Sturgis this week that the only time I’ve seen her so far has been in the mornings. Natalie is out here working the Sturgis Women’s Booth that is part of the Harley-Davidson Road Tour in Rapid City. So here’s a shout out to all the women riders out there – make sure you stop by this booth! On Thursday, I heard there will be a women’s bike build, and I will definitely have to check that out.
I am going to bed early tonight. I'm really excited for tomorrow because I'm going to be going to the H-D Ride-In Show, bright and early. AND the MotorClothes model casting call. Did you know H-D gets a majority of their models for their clothing line catalog from casting calls at dealerships and events? Their motto: We want real riders wearing the gear. I can’t wait!!!
