Good, Clean Fun at the Rally

Picture137 I was ready to get down and dirty today. So after I stopped by the FREE Harley-Davidson bike wash at the H-D Outdoor Festival to clean up, I was off to see things I’ve NEVER seen before.

This is my third time out to Sturgis. In previous years, it’s been a family vacation, meaning camping in national parks, visiting Mount Rushmore, riding through the Needles Hwy and walking the strip in Sturgis so my mom can take pictures to show her coffee friends what “really” goes on. And it’s all good fun because that’s what Sturgis is all about – being around lots of motorcycles and enjoying the amazing scenery in the saddle of your own motorcycle! But I’ve heard stories…

Picture143 We decided to hit up the Glencoe campground. Our hostess Francy told us that 12,000 people reside at this campground each year, making Glencoe the 8th largest city in the entire state of South Dakota during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. How crazy is that?! We stood on the top of their private hill and looked out over the South Dakota prairie and down at the campsite. Glencoe has quite the impressive natural amphitheater. It was an absolutely gorgeous view, and I took it all in before heading down to the “city.”

I had to introduce myself to some of the “citizens” of Glencoe, of course.

Now THIS is the kinda stuff I am talkin’ about. I hadn’t been at any of the campgrounds in Sturgis before. My favorite was the “older” gentleman walking around in the nude. I figured he was off to the showers or got locked out of his tent, or maybe he was letting the sun shine where it never has shined before. Who knows? I couldn’t believe how many rows and rows of campers, RV's, and – in popular demand – motorcycles there were at Glencoe.

And it seemed like a lot of the residents were out riding for the day. I can only imagine what this place is like in the evenings.

In all good fun, I inquired of the locals who were bumming around for the day:

What do you like most about living in Glencoe?
Do you plan on settling here and making Glencoe your home after the rally is over?
In Glencoe, what do you do for a living?
Do you have any plans to retire in Glencoe?
What part of the town do you live on? The good, the bad, or the ugly side?
Is this a typical day for you?

We also got to meet Miss Sturgis!

Picture148 Ah, Miss Sturgis. What an outgoing, friendly, sweet girl she is, indeed. She’s going to be out at Thunder Road right next to the Glencoe campground all week from noon-4 p.m., signing autographs. I told her she has some competition for next year… (me, duh… don’t laugh – not funny!) She told me she can dance. Well, so can I, baby, so can I...

…NOT! (And my friends can attest to that!) But I gave her some good competition, that’s for sure! We had a dance off, and wow. She can twist and turn and move like no other. She was really good! It was really fun…and funny, I’m sure, for the audience to see me “try” to dance just like her. Well, at least I know what I need to work on for next year’s Miss Sturgis competition!

I really want to try to make it up to the light show at Mount Rushmore, tonight. Ha, I’m just full of bright ideas.

Better the dancer than the dance...You could kick the seeds out a pickle. Enjoy your reveiws and reports of the worlds greatest gathering of like minded iron horse riders. Check the Mistic Mountian Campground and look for Pee Wee from Fergus Falls, Mn. He's a true charter member of the Rally Crazies, a character which makes this rally what you may want it to be...FUN. Jess, I don't know. The dancing is on par with Elaine, but without the thumbs. That's OK, I can't do any better myself. But you're a cutie and you sure can wear a pair of jeans and a tank top! I was there last year - rode from Long Island, NY thru SD, did the Beartooth, then back to SD for the rally. Rented a beautiful home outside of Hill City, and spent the week hitting all the sites - Deadwood, Rushmore, Custer State Park, Devil's Tower, etc. Custer and Rushmore were the best. 5,500 miles in all, and what a trip! This year I wish I was there again; next year, I will be. Keep up the good work and have fun....

Man your comments and pictures make me miss Sturgis even more. My wife and I were out there the last 2 years and were just talking about how much we miss not going this year. Especially since we just traded our Yamaha for an 07 electra Glide classic. Already making plans with our friends to make the trip next year. Thanks for the updates.

Wait until late night at Glencoe - the party really begins then! Lots of flashing and beads being handed out. The later it gets, and the more alcohol is consumed, the more people take it off - including the guys! I was a Sturgis "virgin" in 2003 and just HAD to participate, of course. I still have a ton of beads that I earned at Glencoe, plus a lot of great memories.
