Getting ready to hit the road
It’s hard to believe that my 105th Anniversary Ride Home is almost here. It feels like just last year I was on the 100th ride. Where did the years go?
I’ve done many bike road trips, but Anniversary rides are something special. Knowing that thousands of other riders are also making their way to the birthplace of H-D from all corners of the world is a pretty amazing feeling.
I’m not usually one to ship my bike, but schedule and distance has made this a key part of the plan. My job at H-D has me living in the Milwaukee area and I was fortunate enough to be assigned Salinas, CA, as my starting city. My bike for the ride (a Street Glide) was shipped to Perkins H-D in San Francisco where I’ll pick it up, make the short ride to Salinas and attend a kick-off party at the local dealer.
Packing for this trip is proving to be a bit more challenging than usual (complicated by the fact that I still haven’t unpacked from Sturgis). I’m usually just gathering my own gear for the ride, but I talked my wife into joining me for the first couple of legs of this trip. I’ve been riding for 16 years and her longest ride with me has been 30 miles from our house to downtown Milwaukee and back. Three kids have kept her home in the past. Having her on the ride may redefine adventure, but I’m thrilled she’s coming.
I have to admit I’m feeling pretty lucky. Exploring our country on an amazing cross country ride. Meeting and making friends with great people from all over the world. Spending some time with my wife. Getting to call all of this work. Not a bad gig. Let the adventure begin…
