Rated 3 out of 5 by 1 reviewer.
Rated 3 out of 5 by Better Looks than Sound These mufflers are a great choice if you want to get away from the OEM mufflers without spending a lot of money. Be warned that the sound will not be too much different than what you had - a few decibels at most. A far cry from that traditional Harley rumble... The baffles can be removed easily for a deeper sound however that is not recommended due to local/state/EPA laws and regulations. Very easy do-it-yourself install and really compliments the look of a Deluxe - that's the main reason I gave 3 stars vs 2. March 9, 2015

Recently i installed the SE slip-ons (part nr. 80681-12) on my 2012 Softail Slim (german version) without changing the air intake. I just wanted to have a better sound (what i definitely have now) and not more performance - for the time being at least. Although there is stated in the SE-catalogue that an ECM-calibration is NOT required, there are some rumours wich say that it would be necessary. My goal is to spare the engine, so if it is required to change something, i would do it. On the other side, i want to keep everything simple in order to rebuild it into the stock-condition, because in some places of Europe they have very strict noise-abatement-regulations. I would be very grateful for your advice.

Answer:
No, you do not need ECM calibration for these slip-ons as long as you have the stock air filter. The stock air filter will only let in a certain amount of air to keep the air-fuel ratio efficient and correct. Letting in more air with a high-flow air filter without changing the ECM would cause the engine to run lean, thereby burning the valves. If you install a high-flow air filter then you will need ECM calibration but you will notice a nice improvement in throttle response and acceleration and the engine won't have to work as hard to breathe. Installing a high-flow air filter is easy and takes about 30 minutes and can easily be uninstalled to go back to stock.
