Get Your License

After you complete a riding course, you'll need to get the endorsement that makes you legit. Contact the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in your area to see what you need to do to take your motorcycle license test.

How to Get Your Motorcycle License

In some states you need to take a motorcycle safety course to get a motorcycle endorsement on your driver's license–and successfully completing either the Rider's Edge® New Rider Course or the Motorcycle Safety Foundation® (MSF) Basic RiderCourseSM will do the trick.

Once you finish one of these courses, you'll receive a MSF® completion card that may allow you to skip the riding test needed to obtain a motorcycle endorsement.

Questions to Ask Your DMV

If you are not sure what you need to get your motorcycle license, contact your local DMV and ask them the following:

  1. Do I need to take a motorcycle safety course in order to get my motorcycle license?
  2. Do I need to get a temporary motorcycle license for a period of time prior to taking a motorcycle safety course and/or to take a motorcycle riding test?
  3. Do I need to be a certain age before I can become a licensed motorcycle rider?
  4. Is there a State Motorcycle Safety Handbook available for research?
  5. If I don't need to take a motorcycle safety course, how do I become a licensed motorcycle rider?
