You’ve arrived. Welcome.
Exclusively for you, our Archivists have assembled a wealth of stories, photos, and artifacts that provide a true insider’s view of the Harley-Davidson legacy. Enjoy your visit, and thanks for being a valued Member of the Harley-Davidson Museum.
Willie G. Davidson has been designing motorcycles for nearly 50 years, but has been drawing and painting for even longer. Before he begins a watercolor piece, he creates a sketch of how he sees the piece in his mind’s eye.
“The sketch gives me a chance to feel out what I’m seeing, to kind of arrange the elements. Contrast in a painting is a critical element, and if you’re gonna light something, you’ve gotta figure out your shadows, because they help define the object. So the little sketch is an arrangement in black and white, and it kinda gets me off the ground, then I transfer it to the bigger sheet.”
– Willie G. Davidson
A series of Davidson’s watercolor paintings went on exhibit at the Museum in January 2012. These sketches provided the inspiration for some of the pieces and show the artist’s process at work.
