History, with all The Dust Blown Off
Traveling into the past is a thrill when you ride with Harley-Davidson.
1986 Softail Custom – The Harley Fox
Customization is the creative, visual, expression of a rider’s personality. While many prefer to leave their machines as they received it from the dealer, others choose to make their ride distinctive by giving it a personal touch. This practice may consist of a few minor additions or subtractions all the way to full-blown tailoring. One such customized bike is the 1986 FXSTC Softail Custom known as the “Harley Fox.”
Powered by a 1340cc Evolution engine with a 5-speed transmission, the Harley Fox has first production chrome and black treatment with polished fin edges. Purchased by Gail Anderson of Pompano Beach, Florida in 1986, this machine was truly made her own through customization – from the twisted front spokes in the front to the ‘HRLY FOX’ license plate at the rear. Gail made sure that her machine fit her like a glove by replacing the standard 26.31″ height seat with a custom 24″ height seat. From all viewing angles you can identify her added personal touches such as a kickstand shaped like a lady’s leg complete with fishnet stockings and red painted toenails, a specialized paint job on the gas tank, flower design engraving on the gas caps, scrolled leather on the seat and an engraved fox head on the clutch cover, among other changes. This machine brings a lot of attention and even earned Gail top prize at the first Ladies of Harley ride-in show at the Daytona rally in 1987.
The Harley-Davidson Museum first featured the Harley Fox as part of a women’s exhibit in 2011. When asked about having her motorcycle featured at the Museum, Gail stated: “I never built it for that. I’m pleased to be honored with the women of Harley-Davidson.” The Archives took permanent ownership of the Harley Fox in 2012.
