Artifact Spotlight:
Joe Ryan’s Notebook
Mechanic Joseph Ray Ryan took charge of the Service School in 1919, a position he maintained for more than four decades. He was vital to the success of this training department and was also involved in the parts department and factory racing program throughout his many years at Harley-Davidson.
Notebooks like this one from the 1920s contained remarks and materials that Ryan used during classroom lessons. He mentored thousands of dealers and mechanics throughout his career, leaving an enduring legacy when he retired in 1963.
This artifact was a gift of Thomas, Patrick, and Michael Harrison. It is currently on display in the Museum, alongside Ryan’s eyeglasses, business card, and tire pressure gauge.
