H-D founder Walter Davidson was born.
Walter Davidson was born on Sept. 30, 1876 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to William C. Davidson. In his youth, Walter learned a trade as a machinist working for the Milwaukee Railroad, and later worked in Parsons, Kansas. In 1903, he received a letter from his brother Arthur, who had teamed up with their longtime friend William Harley. As the story goes, the letter said that the two had built a motorcycle and were going to let young Walter take the first ride. When Walter arrived in Milwaukee, it turned out that the new motorcycle was unfinished and the two young builders needed his help! In any case, the remainder of his life would be spent with the Harley-Davidson Motor Company.
