This artifact is the tank badge from the 1957 XL Sportster® motorcycle. It was the first year of a plastic badge, which was less expensive to produce than the metal predecessors. An electroplating process created a coating around the piece, making it durable even in the outdoors. Willie G. Davidson worked on the design of this emblem. The Sportster® is Harley-Davidson’s longest-running platform. This vehicle is currently on display on the lower level of the Museum.
