History, with all The Dust Blown Off
Traveling into the past is a thrill when you ride with Harley-Davidson.
1947 MODEL FL
This Special Sport Solo is powered by a 74 cubic inch OHV Knucklehead motor and 4-speed handshift transmission. It has a rubber-mounted instrument panel and self-aligning head bearings. The gas tank holds 4 gallons, and the oil tank holds one. A total of 6,893 model FL were built in 1947, the final year of the Knucklehead.
This vehicle is heavily accessorized, showing that its rider was dedicated to customization and making a statement of individuality. The additions include fringed saddlebags, rear fender rails, modified trumpet exhaust, chrome oil tank, passing lamps and chrome front wheel cover. It also has a buddy seat with a gray cover, Hollywood handlebars, front engine guard with highway pegs, and “Super Deluxe” nameplates. It even has a chrome shift knob! This paint combination, maroon and beige, was not offered as an option and is likely a repaint.
When this bike rolled down the road, other riders could recognize it by is unique features, and also by its “NUKLHD” license plate. It is currently on exhibit in the Custom Culture gallery of the Museum.
