Touring Made Easy

Claremont (May 2, 2013) - Even though the weather can be unpredictable at this time of year, many riders will be getting their bike routes mapped out in detail and their beloved Harley-Davidson® Motorcycles prepped and ready for a tour. By adding a few of the right Genuine Parts and Accessories, the weather won’t even matter and you can set off on your trip without a care in the world.

With thousands of accessories to choose, it’s difficult to know where to start, so check out our handy guide on the things to think about and ways to make your tour even more memorable!

1. Protect yourself from the elements

As we all know, the weather isn’t always predictable and although you set off in the sunshine, it could be raining cats and dogs by lunch! Ensure you pack some good quality waterproofs, like our FXRG rainsuit or Illumination rainsuit, which will ensure that the rain is kept at bay. The Illumination rainsuit also features 3M Scotchlite reflective piping throughout, ensuring you’ll be seen from all angles if you’re riding at night.

It’s not just by wearing waterproof clothes that you can protect yourself from the elements – we have a number of nifty items that you can fit to your motorcycle which aim to keep you warm and dry, and no, we don’t do a roof! However we do have some great alternatives such as soft lowers. Fitting to the side of the machine, these offer protection from wind and mud and minimise the cold updraft that you can get while riding. With reflective piping and a Bar and Shield logo on the front of each, there will be no mistaking what bike you’re riding.

2. Be sure to pack everything you need

Often when heading off on a tour you have to give up certain items because you don’t have the space – why make this compromise? Don’t run the risk of ramming a rain suit or an extra T-shirt into your already bulging panniers. Try our space-saving shrink sacks, which are the perfect option for those who like to keep things organised and make the most of the luggage space available. Simply put your items inside one of the three sizes of bag available, zip up the bag and squeeze out all the air. The same number of items take up less room – perfect!

Looking for even more room? The brand new adjustable two-up luggage rack offers riders 50% more usable space at the simple touch of a button. This innovative rack features telescopic side extensions that allow the rider to customise its width in seconds. If you’re not keen on the look of a touring motorcycle, you can detach the rack just as easily as you fit and extend it – the perfect solution!

3. Plan to explore

There’s nothing worse than wanting to explore but being held back by not knowing your way. The Road Tech Zumo 660 GPS Navigator from Harley-Davidson is an easy solution to your problem. With all the functions of a regular sat nav and more, you can easily find your way around on two wheels – or four – as you can even use it in your car!

For African and out-of-Europe riders, simply download the relevant map from the Garmin website to your own unit, so there’s no limit to where your adventures take you. You don’t even need to worry about taking your gloves off as the touch-screen is glove-friendly too! It also boasts a built-in Harley-Davidson® dealer database so you’ll be able to track down your nearest dealer wherever you are. What are you waiting for? Get exploring!

However don’t despair, you will never be far from your nearest Harley-Davidson dealership. The H-D Zumo 660 come pre-loaded with all the authorised Harley-Davidson dealerships already, so if you need expert advice or simply want to go and pick up your souvenir t-shirt, you won’t need to navigate your own way!

4. Get comfortable

It’s important to be comfortable if you’re planning on riding a considerable number of miles – ever suffered the case of ‘numb bum’? The Road Zeppelin Seat is the crème de la crème of making yourself comfortable on your bike. Taking the place of your original seat, this seat contains air bladders which will re-distribute the air in the seat. Don’t want such a permanent fixture? Try out the Road Zeppelin Seat Pad, which was only introduced last year. This seat pad fits to any motorcycle in the Harley-Davidson range and is the perfect balance of comfort and style and it can easily be removed when you no longer need it.

Taking a pillion? Why not fit the Tour-Pak Passenger armrests to ensure your guest has an enjoyable ride? Both armrests swivel out of the way to ensure easy mounting and dismounting and the pads can be put in a number of positions. There are also handy storage pockets in the armrest too, offering extra space for mobile phones and MP3 devices.

5. Amplify your trip

Car drivers get to blast out their favourite tunes so why shouldn’t you? Simply fit one of our BOOM! Audio systems to your motorcycle, plug in your MP3 player or put on your favourite CD or radio station and share it with all the people you pass! The system features details such as hidden antennas, amplifiers, speak pods for your panniers and fairing speakers to give you the best sound. Not technically minded? It doesn’t matter; the easy to use interface makes it easy to plug and play. Head to your local dealer to find out the best BOOM! Audio solution for you.

There’s thousands of options to keep you dry and entertained on your tour, so whether you’re heading to another continent, venturing to Rome for Harley-Davidson’s 110th anniversary celebrations or planning a trip of your own in the UK, be sure to speak with your local dealer or check out the Parts and Accessories catalogue to see what can make your trip even better!
