Claremont (April 20, 2012) - Check Your Helmet It would be an understatement to say that your helmet is a very important part of your riding kit so it is important to ensure that it is well protected when you’re out and about on your bike.
Although your helmet is something that you should take care of all year round, April is ‘Check your helmet’ month where we at Harley-Davidson like to raise awareness of the three main checks that you should carry out on your lid:- Check the fit
It is important that your helmet fits you properly. Too loose and it could slide right off your head if you make contact with the ground and too tight and it will leave you with stupid looking marks on your head and a headache after you have worn it for a length of time.- Check for damage
Every time you put your helmet on give it the once over. Check for any marks/scuffs as this may indicate whether it is damaged. However it is important to remember that a helmet can be damaged inside despite having no visible damage to the outside! Which brings us onto our 3rd recommended check…- Check its age
It is recommended that you replace your helmet every 3-5 years. Over time the padding inside the helmet can become compacted, and not to mention dirty from all the grease and sweat. The outer shell can also become degraded through wear and tear, road debris and cleaning.
To prolong the life of helmet here are 4 top tips:
- DON’T leave your helmet hung on your bike or resting on the seat – while it may be tempting, there is a good chance it could fall off or the padding inside could be damaged.
- DO use mild soap and water to wash the outer shell and not harsh chemicals. Helmets often have protective coatings which can be harmed by cleaning products.
- DO wipe your helmet when you return from a journey. This will prevent it from accumulating dirt and will stop the visor from getting scratched when you put it away. Harley-Davidson even does a nifty product, Bug Remover, which does exactly what it says...
- DO ensure you put your helmet on, get out on your bike and have fun as much as you possibly can!
